For families
Childcare First-Day Checklist
A calm first day sets the tone for the whole placement. Work through this the evening before.
1.Information to hand over
- Emergency contacts: both parents, a nearby relative or neighbour
- GP surgery name, address and phone number; NHS numbers
- Allergies, medical conditions, medication and where it is kept
- School and nursery details, collection passwords and staff names
- Clubs, appointments and the weekly routine
- House rules: screens, snacks, bedtime, discipline approach
2.Practical setup
- Keys, alarm code and how to lock up
- Wi-Fi password and where the thermostat and fuse box are
- First aid kit location and what is in it
- Fire exits, smoke alarms and where extinguishers are kept
- Car seats fitted and checked, if driving
- Where to find spare clothes, nappies, food and cleaning supplies
3.The day itself
- Plan a short overlap so you can introduce the routine in person
- Agree how and when they will update you during the day
- Keep the first day simple — home and a local park is plenty
- Leave a written copy of the routine on the fridge
4.End of week one
- A 15-minute review: what worked, what didn't
- Confirm hours worked and the first pay date
- Adjust the routine together rather than by message
